The ‘La Monella’ is a clean, lightweight and bright-berried sparkling Barbera, a note to this regions history of producing Barbera with bubbles. I have been told it is an ideal pairing for Bagne Cauda, a hearty dish of heated olive oil, anchovy and blanched veg. Developed during impoverished times of the 40’s and 50’s, it is funny to think Barbera was the leading grape of the region. I imagine it was fermented naturally in the bottle and served unfiltered t a farm table. La Monella is a cleaner version, but still retains a light frame and touch of spice Asti Barbera are known for. Perfect with cheese and salumi.

Braida is among the most important estates in Piemonte. Located in Asti, they have been dedicated Barbera growers since Giacomo Bologna purchased the Grand Cru vineyard ‘Bricco della Uccelone’ in the early 1960’s. The name itself “Braida” was a nickname awarded to Giacomo for his handball skills, earning him a strong reputation among locals. He first made Barbera as a wine for friends and nearby restaurants, yet this modest beginning over the years has grown into one of the flagship winery in Asti. Most think of Barolo or Barbaresco when considering Piemontese wines, yet the Bologna’s do not produce these. Along with a range of vineyard designate Barbera, they promote under-the-radar treasures like Brachetto, Nascetta and Grignolino. These grapes speak of the alps and heady aromas of flora and fauna from such alpine climate.
