Grand Cru Brunello from the roof of Montalcino in Toscana, La Ragnaie ‘18 immediately greets with radiant red fruit, woven tight around a core of acidity and backbone, ready to be released into the atmosphere of your dreams!
Among the very best tastings from my trip in April of 2023 was a chance encounter with the winemaker of La Ragnaie. Located among some of the highest altitudes in Montalcino (550-600m), La Ragnaie produces a style of Brunello hard to find: not a big, bold expression of Sangiovese, but rather a more taunt, aromatically complex wine experience that unfolds over the course of an evening. I found myself returning to the glass again and again, marveling at the aromas this producer captures. Riccardo Campinoti purchased this 15 hectar estate in 2002 and works organically with biodynamic preparation in the vineyard and traditionally in the winery. Riccardo is a hands-off winemaker, where the cool windswept climate at the very top of Montalcino is captured beautifully in the bottle each year. 2018 is known for its overall cooler climate, making this an ideal fit for Ragnaie’s house style. Enjoy when you have a little time to spare, as this wine needs to be decanted and enjoyed with perfectly marbled meat.
