Luigi Oddero 2021 is an bright and nuanced Langhe Nebbiolo, feeling more like a youthful Barbaresco with a touch of age. From one of the brothers of the esteemed Oddero family, they typically work long macerations and aging in cask. This Langhe Nebbiolo sees a brief maceration and is raised in giant casks which shape but never impart aroma or flavor. I love how integrated and mature this feels out of the gate, gaining in body and aroma as it opens.

Luigi Oddero is among the great producers in Barolo. The Oddero family have been farming Nebbiolo since the Iraly 1800’s. It was initially Luigi and brother Giacomo who ran the estate for years, known as simply Oddero. They made some of the finest representation of Barolo in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. 1964 is still a wine I will forever remember. In 2010 they split due to personal differences and divided the estates vineyards and wines down the middle. Luigi passed short thereafter, yet his wife and sons continue to turn out expressive Barolo from their holding in La Morra. They work organically in the vineyard and stay out of the way in the winery, allowing these cask-aged grapes to slowly evolve over time.
