Scopetone 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Toscana
Scopetone 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Toscana
Scopetone 2018 is old-school Brunello in a cool-ish vintage, showing balanced tannin, fruit and acidity. The house style is considered rustic, making for a nice contrast between farmhouse fruit/earth and fine grained tannin.
North of the town of Montalcino lies Scoptone, a tiny estate often recalled by old-timers as passionate traditionalists during a time of extravagance. It was the late 70’s and Tuscany had been caught up in the fashionable trend of producing opaque wines and few estates resisted. Two outsiders, Federigo Abbrachi and Angela Corioni, had different plans for their winery north of town near the famous Montosoli hill. With the help of consulting-winemakers Giulio Gambelli and Attilio Pagli, they quietly produced traditional Brunello from the historic vineyard of Scarnacuoia, made famous by Biondi Santi almost two centuries before. Today, led by a local couple Lorendana Tangelli and Antonio Brandi, winemaking continues the tradition of extended maceration and aging in large cask. They complimented this with a full organic certification, which they prefer not to list on the label. This Brunello spend 15 days on the skins, 3 years in Botti and another year in glazed cement tank before settling in the bottle.
